Description

When a bone is in a weakened state, as in the case of osteoporosis, just about anything⎯including a strong sneeze or low-energy fall⎯can result in a fracture. Easily broken bones like these are known as fragility fractures. Keep reading to learn more.

Causes & Triggers

  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Osteoporosis

Signs & Symptoms

  • Apparent deformity or break
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Inability or limited ability to move limb
  • Numbness
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Tingling

Tips & Treatment

  • In addition to treating the fracture with slinging, splinting or casting and physical therapy, the underlying cause (bone loss due to osteoporosis) also must be addressed.
  • Non-surgical treatment for osteoporosis focuses on lifestyle changes including exercise, nutrition, prescription vitamins and fall prevention education.
