Shoulder Separation Treatment

Description

Nonsurgical treatments include slings, ice and medication to manage pain. Most return to full function following a separation injury, even with significant deformity. If surgery is recommended, it is often because pain persists or the deformity worsens and becomes severe. Your physician may trim back the end of the collarbone to prevent friction against the acromion. To address severe deformity, the surgeon may reconstruct the ligaments that attach to the underside of the collarbone. In both nonsurgical and surgical interventions, the shoulder will require rehabilitation in the form of physical therapy to restore strength, motion and flexibility.
