Patient Resources
Kevin P. Smidt, M.D., is a fellowship‑trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement, with a focus on minimally invasive, muscle‑sparing techniques that help patients recover faster with less swelling and less pain. His goal is to deliver more personalized joint replacement care, providing the comfort and attention of a concierge‑level experience from consultation through recovery.
Dr. Smidt uses modern techniques to help patients move more naturally and recover more comfortably after surgery. He performs hip replacement through a muscle-sparing anterior approach, designed to reduce pain and help patients return to an active lifestyle sooner. Dr. Smidt utilizes the subvastus approach for total and partial knee replacement, which spares the quadriceps muscle and tendon helping to reduce swelling and support earlier mobility. He also incorporates kinematic alignment principles to personalize his knee replacement to each patient’s unique anatomy.
As part of the national “March 2 A Million” movement, Dr. Smidt is committed to helping patients recover from joint replacement with little to no opioids whenever safely possible, focusing on rapid recovery protocols and multimodal pain control. In certain cases, Dr. Smidt uses robotic‑assisted technology as an adjunct to enhance component position and alignment. Every surgical plan is customized – the right technique for the right patient.
Originally from the Chicago suburbs, Dr. Smidt graduated from The Ohio State University’s University Honors Program before earning his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Louisiana State University Health in Shreveport, where he was recognized as Most Outstanding Resident and achieved the highest orthopedic in‑training examination score, followed by advanced fellowship training in Adult Reconstruction at Baptist Health South Florida. He has authored numerous publications and book chapters and has presented his research at national meetings.
Dr. Smidt is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and the Anterior Hip Foundation (AHF) and serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Smidt enjoys time with his wife, Amanda, and their two daughters. He stays active through powerlifting, Peloton rides, hot yoga, and golf, and enjoys cooking and traveling with his family.
