Acromioclavicular Joint / Shoulder Separation / A/C Separation

Description

Shoulder damage as a result of a fall or direct blow may result in what’s known as a shoulder separation. In truth, the condition is an injury to the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. The AC joint is located where the collarbone meets the highest point of the shoulder blade. Read on for more.

Causes & Triggers

  • Accident (especially motor vehicle)
  • Fall
  • Sports injury

Signs & Symptoms

  • Apparent deformity or misalignment
  • Pain

Tips & Treatment

  • Weakness, numbness or cold fingers may be signs of a more serious injury.
  • Although this injury usually does not require surgery, seek immediate medical attention.
  • Treatment may involve non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication, slinging or splinting, and icing affected areas.
  • Surgical intervention may be necessary if there is significant deformity or ligament injury.
