A Patient Story

I’ve been struggling with chronic knee pain and stiffness from numerous knee surgeries over the last ten years. I had a total knee replacement in 2010, two total revisions and a few manipulations all on the same knee within a four year time period. From the first procedure my knee joint was always very painful, stiff and swollen and never really seemed to improve over time. Nothing felt right with each surgery and over time I lost almost all mobility in the knee and was living with (at most) a 25-30 degree bend on a good day. My active lifestyle, quality of living and law enforcement career came to a screeching halt. I chose to retire earlier than I had planned simply because I just couldn’t safely perform my job duties and was in constant pain.

As soon as I retired, I packed up my entire house, loaded my dogs in my car and drove thousands of miles across the US from California to Ohio to be near family. I spent a few years searching for a surgeon in Ohio that would be able to help my situation. I was told there was nothing they could do for me because too much time had passed and the prosthesis seemed to be fine. I gave up searching and finally succumbed to the reality that I would just have to live the rest of my life with a knee that barely bends and is painful 24/7.

Orthopedic One was recommended to me by several people so I finally looked into it. Luckily I found Dr. Biyani. He spent a considerable amount of time with me during my initial consultation. We went over everything from the beginning of my dilemma to the present day and I told him what I was hoping to gain from another revision, if it could be done. He said he could definitely help me but it would be a challenge for us both and there was no guarantee due to the fact so many years had gone by with almost no bend in my knee. That’s all I needed to hear was that there was a possibility for me to have a better quality of life and to be active again. When he said those words, I felt like Snow White, birds were singing, bunnies and chipmunks were all around me and everything was finally going to be OK.

Surgery day came and everything went very well. Dr. Biyani got me to 90 degrees in the O.R and said if I’m able to get more on my own, it wouldn’t be easy but it could be done. My knee has never felt better! I’ve had minimal swelling and I’m improving each day. I still have pain, but it’s nowhere near the level of intensity that I’ve had for the last ten years. The pain I do have now mostly comes from the quad muscles being stretched and used and not in the joint area. I’m working hard every day to maintain what I gain and my range of motion has improved with every physical therapy visit. I’m now six weeks post op, I’m at 107 degrees and still pushing to gain more mobility. I can’t put into words how grateful I am for Dr. Biyani! His expertise, his honesty, and his willingness to help me try to live a healthier, better life has completely changed my life. I will forever be grateful for him and for what he did for me. I can finally ride a bike again, walk up and down stairs, sit in a chair with both feet on the floor and countless other things I wasn’t able to do, all because of Dr. Biyani. The surgeons and staff at Orthopedic One is by far the absolute best!
