Olecranon Fracture

Description

An olecranon fracture is a break of the bony protrusion at the elbow, known as the “funny bone.” Located at the end of the lower arm bone (the ulna), an olecranon fracture may be treated non-surgically or surgically, depending on the injury. Keep reading to learn more.

Causes & Triggers

  • Direct impact or blow
  • Falls (especially with outstretched arm)

Signs & Symptoms

  • Bruising
  • Inability to straighten arm
  • Numbness
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness

Tips & Treatment

  • Treatment may include non-surgical alternatives such as slinging, splinting, limiting lifting activities and physical therapy.
  • Surgery may be required if the bones are displaced or if the triceps muscle detaches.
